Historical Circumstances for need of Chandigarh
August 15, 1947, the day of independence of India was also the day of
division of a nation into India and Pakistan, this was also the day of
division of State of
Punjab (Punj+Aab) named so for being the land of five rivers being divided into two states West punjab gone in Pakistan with retaining Lahore as its capital and East Punjab in India became a state without a capital. Shimla which used to be the summer capital of India and had the infrastructure was salected as the temporary capital of Punjab.
The Government of Punjab selected brilliant young engineer Mr. P.L. Verma to undertake the tasks of search for a premanent Capital City for the State of Punjab.
Chandigarh Art & Culture
Chandigarh is as much cosmopolitan in nature as any other Indian town with numerous temples, mosques, shrines and bhawans located through out the city. The traditions followed in the city are a mix of many traditions followed through out the country. One can see and participate in almost, all of the religious activities of every religion in the country [Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam].
There is a Cultural Complex in sector 10 of Chandigarh which include
an Audio-Visual Training Institute, a Museum and an Art Gallery.
World acclaimed Rock Garden, with the artistic figures and things created by Shri Nek Chand, from broken pieces of items like crockery, bangles, pots, stones etc.,
is a unique example of art work.

Morni Hills are an offshoot of Shivalik range, which run in two parallel ranges. The village of Morni (Bhoj Jabial) lies on the mountainside, at 1220 meters or 3600 feet above sea level. Traditions assign the name of Morni to a Queen who is believed to have ruled this area. Situated in the lower reaches of the Shivalik range, Morni is ideal for a holiday with its cool clime, beautiful natural vistas and myriad opportunities for bird watching, trekking, rock-climbing and other adventure sports. The best time for visiting Morni Hills is from September to March.
Just five hours drive away from Delhi and 45 km from Chandigarh, Morni in Panchkula district Haryana, combines the best of an idyllic retreat with action, adventure and fun. The road to Morni has breathtaking scenery as it goes past sleepy hamlets, cultivated terraces and hill forest. For those, who like to travel in mountains, the state of Himachal Pradesh is close by.
Myth, mystery and history also have a place in Morni’s attractions. The Mountain Quail tourist complex of Haryana Tourism is built close to the ruins of an old fort. The climate is salubrious and the area is suitable for trekking. The Haryana Government, has developed this hill resort and provides facilities to tourists; a motorable road was constructed to connect the Morni hills with Haryana state highway near Panchkula. A forest tourist hut, Lal Munia and a PWD rest house were also constructed to accommodate tourists and trekkers.

Surajkund : This ancient village dating back to the 10th century built by the Tomar Rajput chieftain, Raja Suraj Pal, is the venue for the popular Surajkund Crafts Mela.
Golfing Getaway : The 12-hole Aravalli golf course spread over 67 acres is popular with weekend golfers from Delhi.
Badhkal Lake : This picturesque lake is a popular with picnickers on weekends and with migratory birds every winter.
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary : Home to migratory birds ranging from egrets to cormorants and storks, this wetland was also a favourite haunt of Salim Ali.
Manesar : There is nothing here apart form the Heritage Village Resort built along the lines of a traditional haveli.
Sohna : At the base of a squat Aravalli Hill, Shona is excellent for a de-stressing weekend.
Damdama Lake: The Aravalli Hills form a striking backdrop to this lake which is perfect for canoeing, kayaking and angling.
Other Attractions :
The Old Fort : Ruins of a fort can also be seen here. The locals believe that the fort belonged to the Queen of Morni Hills.

Museum and Art Gallery : The Government Museum and Art Gallery in Sector 10 of Chandigarh has a fine collection of stone sculptures of the Gandhara period. The museum is the place to see the prehistoric fossils and artifacts along with modern art and miniature paintings. The Government Museum and Art Gallery of Chandigarh is open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and is closed on Mondays.
International Dolls Museum : The International Dolls
Museum in Sector 23 of Chandigarh has an interesting collection of dolls
and puppets from all over the world covering the variant art of more
than 25 countries. Chandigarh city’s International Dolls museum is
closed on Sundays.
City Museum : The City Museum is located in sector 10, was opened in December, 1997 and is run by the department of Urban Planning Chandigarh. It is dedicated to the History, Plan & execution of development and present & future of Chandigarh. It houses the display of the material related to design & architecture, the theme of “Chandigarh today & tomorrow” and a large collection of rare pictures of the important events & personalities associated with the birth and upbringing of this young city of free India. The museum is well arranged in three storeys each storey being dedicated to different themes.
National Gallery of Portraits : National Gallery of Portraits is in sector 17. Portraits of Indian Freedom Fighters, rare documents of the voices of leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru are Exhibited and preserved here.
